A trainee can replace an exercise only with an alternative offered for that row of the plan. The alternatives are the ones you listed on the row. If the plan has automatic alternatives switched on, the app offers the automatic picks for that exercise instead. If a row has no alternatives, the Substitute button is not there.

How the swap works

1

Open the list

In the workout, or in its preview, tap Substitute on the exercise. A sheet titled Swap exercise opens with the line Pick an exercise your coach approved for this slot.
2

Pick an exercise

The list starts with the exercise from the plan, marked Your coach picked this, followed by each approved alternative. The one in use has a check mark.
3

Confirm if sets were already logged

If any set of the current exercise is already ticked, the app asks Replace this exercise? and warns The sets you already logged for it will be cleared.
4

Choose how long the swap lasts

After the swap the app asks Save this swap? and names both exercises. The trainee picks Save for future workouts or One-time swap.

What changes after a swap

  • The name, picture, video and instructions become those of the new exercise.
  • The sets, reps and rest stay as you prescribed them. Only the exercise changes.
  • Anything typed for the old exercise in this workout is cleared.
  • The Previous column and the personal record now come from the trainee’s own history with the new exercise.
  • The Substitute button is highlighted so it is clear the row was swapped.

One-time or saved

If saving for the future fails, for example with no connection, the app says Couldn’t save it for next time. The swap still applies today. A saved swap belongs to that trainee and that row. It does not change your template or any other trainee’s plan.

Going back to the original

The trainee opens Substitute again and picks the exercise marked Your coach picked this. The same question appears, and choosing Save for future workouts removes the saved swap so the plan’s exercise is the default again.

Good to know

  • A swap during a workout does not carry the weights across. The new exercise starts with its own history.
  • Technique video requests and coach feedback follow the exercise, so a swapped exercise shows its own.
  • In the workout history and on your side, the workout is recorded with the exercise that was actually performed.
