Every content item can carry media. In the editor it sits under Photo or video, with a small switcher for the kind of media you want to add.

What each type can carry

Image

Click Upload image, or drag a file onto the box. The hint under the box lists the accepted formats and the size limit. Paste a YouTube link or a direct video link. YouTube and Vimeo links are played with their own player. Any other link is treated as a direct video file.

Upload video

Available on Video items. Pick a video file from your computer. Large videos upload in parts, so keep the editor open until you see Uploaded.

PDF

Available on File items. Upload a PDF, then click Preview to check it in PDF preview before saving. To swap media, click Change file. To take it away, click Remove.

Size limits

Over the limit you see File is too large. Maximum size is 25 MB. or Video is too large. Maximum size is 99 MB. The same two limits apply to media you add to a form with the Image / video block and to the home banner.
For a video over 99 MB, upload it to YouTube or Vimeo and paste the link instead.

Accepted formats

Any other file gives This file type is not supported.

Thumbnails

The thumbnail is the picture on the item’s card in the app.

Video thumbnails

A video item picks its thumbnail for you. The Thumbnail field has two modes. Automatic. The default.
  • For a YouTube or Vimeo link, the video’s own poster image is used.
  • For an uploaded video or a direct video link, a frame is taken from near the start of the video. While it works you see Taking a frame from the video…, then Taken from the video.
  • Click Take again to grab the frame again, for example after changing the video.
  • Before any video is added, the field reads Add a video and the thumbnail is taken from it automatically.
Custom. Upload your own image. Use it when the automatic frame is dark, blurry or catches someone mid-blink. If a frame cannot be taken you see We could not take a frame from this video. Switch to a custom image. This can happen with links to sites that do not allow their video to be read. Upload a custom thumbnail and carry on. When you reopen an item, the field opens in the mode you chose last.

Thumbnails for other types

Recipes, knowledge items, files, other items and external links have an optional thumbnail upload. Without one, the card uses the item’s own image where it has one. A thumbnail matters most for:
  • File items, where the media is a PDF and there is no picture otherwise.
  • External link items, where the thumbnail is the only artwork.

If an upload fails

You see Upload failed. Please try again. or Could not upload file.
  • Check the format and size against the tables above.
  • Check your connection and try again. A large video needs a steady connection for the whole upload.
  • Do not close the editor or leave the page while Uploading… is showing.
