A condition hides a field or a page until an earlier answer matches a rule. Use it to keep forms short, for example asking about an injury only when the trainee says they have one. A conditional field carries a Conditional badge on the canvas. A conditional page shows Conditional page.

Add a condition to a field

1

Select the field

Click the field on the canvas and scroll to Condition in the edit panel.
2

Turn it on

Switch on Show this field only if….
3

Pick the source

Under If the answer to, pick the earlier question the rule looks at.
4

Pick the rule

Under Meets the condition, pick how to compare. Then fill in Value when the rule needs one.
The field now appears only while the condition holds.

Add a condition to a page

Open Page actions on the page tab and choose Page condition. Turn on Show this page only if…, set the rule the same way, and click Save. When a page is hidden, the trainee skips it and none of its fields are asked.

Which questions can be a source

The source must come before the field or page it controls. For a field, that means any earlier page, or higher up on the same page. For a page, it means any earlier page. If nothing qualifies yet you see No fields to build a condition on yet. Add or move the source question first. Display blocks and Food preferences cannot be a source.

Rules you can use

The rules on offer depend on the kind of question you picked as the source. A few details:
  • Between asks for a From date and a To date and includes both days.
  • The age rules ask for Age (years) and work out the age from the date the trainee entered. They are meant for a Birth date source.
  • For a Multiple choice question that allows several answers, Equals is true when the chosen value is one of the trainee’s picks.
  • Comparison rules such as Greater than are false while the source is still empty. Use Empty or Not empty when you want to react to a missing answer.

How conditions behave

  • Hidden fields are never required. A required field that is hidden does not block the trainee.
  • Hidden answers are not saved. If the trainee fills a field and then changes an earlier answer so the field disappears, that answer is dropped when the form is submitted.
  • A field needs both its own condition and its page. If the page is hidden, every field on it is hidden.
  • Broken conditions show the content. If you delete the source question, the builder says The source field was deleted. The condition is off and this always shows. Perform always prefers showing a field to hiding it for good.
The same rules run in the builder’s simulator, in the trainee app and on the server when the form is submitted, so what you test is what the trainee gets.
After adding conditions, open Form simulator and try each path. Answer the source question both ways and check that the right fields and pages come and go.
