WhatsApp has two kinds of outgoing message. Free text only reaches people who wrote to your number in the last 24 hours. A template that Meta approved reaches anyone, at any time. This page explains where each is used in Perform.

Where templates live

Your templates are created and approved in SmartSend, not in Perform. Perform reads the approved templates from your connected SmartSend account and lets you use them in automations. There is no template editor in the Perform coach app.

Use one of your templates in an automation

1

Connect SmartSend

Templates from your account only appear when SmartSend is connected. See Connecting WhatsApp.
2

Add a WhatsApp step

On the Automations page, open an automation, click the plus button and choose WhatsApp message. Keep the mode on Approved template.
3

Pick the template

Open the Template menu. Your templates are under Your SmartSend templates.
4

Fill in the parameters

Perform loads the template’s parameters and shows one field for each. Type the value to send.

Parameters and the first name

A parameter is a blank in the template that is filled in for each message.
  • A value you type is sent as it is to every trainee.
  • The First name button next to a field inserts the first name token. It is replaced with each trainee’s own first name.
  • When a parameter looks like a name, Perform fills it with the first name token for you. Check it before you rely on it.
  • You can mix text and the token in one value.
The first name is the only personal detail you can insert in an automation. A step holds up to 20 parameters, each up to 300 characters.
The Template menu also lists four Perform templates: form reminder, subscription renewal, birthday greeting and weekly check-in. They are still waiting for approval, so a step that uses one sends nothing for now. Use your own templates until then.

Free messages in an automation

Switch the WhatsApp step to Free message · SmartSend to write any text. It is sent from your studio’s connected number. Because of the 24 hour rule, it only arrives for trainees who wrote to you recently.

What Perform sends on WhatsApp automatically

About the invitation

  • It is off unless you tick it. Adding a trainee never sends a WhatsApp message by surprise.
  • The trainee gets a message with joining details right after they are added. It includes their first name and your studio’s name.
  • Trainees created by a connected tool such as Make are only invited when the scenario asks for it.

About sign-in codes

Sign-in codes are part of how accounts work and cannot be turned off or reworded.

When a WhatsApp message is not sent

A WhatsApp message is skipped, without an error on your side, when:
  • The trainee has no phone number.
  • SmartSend is not connected, for messages that go out from your studio’s number.
  • The template was not picked, or is not approved yet.
  • The text is empty.
Perform has no delivery log for WhatsApp. Check the conversation in SmartSend to confirm a message arrived.

Incoming messages

When SmartSend forwards an incoming message to Perform and the sender’s number matches a trainee, a Message task opens on the Work Board. Group messages are ignored. See Inbox and notification center.
